Willow Grove Crossing Needed

Member for Narracan Gary Blackwood has used debate in Parliament this week to call for an upgrade to the Willow Grove Primary School crossing that would incorporate flashing lights to warn drivers that the crossing was in use.

Mr Blackwood said the variety of road users that passed through the area during peak school times make upgrading the crossing an urgent priority.

'Heavy traffic, such as milk tankers, fuel trucks and logging trucks, also increase the risk to schoolchildren using the crossing', said Mr Blackwood.

'The school crossing is used by many children, particularly in the afternoon as parents park on the verge of the recreation reserve opposite the school.

'Parking is limited on the service road beside the school due to its short length.

'Many children who have sporting commitments after school use the crossing to access the recreation reserve opposite the school', Mr Blackwood said.

Mr Blackwood said the random presence of marked and unmarked police cars did not provide a solution for the longer term by making road users aware that the crossing was there and in use.

'[Police presence] acted as a deterrent for a short while after that, but in time people become forgetful and speed increases', Mr Blackwood said.

'The safety and welfare of the children, families and staff is the prime concern.

'Giving the travelling public a timely warning of the speed restrictions in the school precinct is the responsible action to take to assist them and enhance the safety of the school community.'

Amber flashing warning lights have already proved a success at similar schools in the region, including Tanjil South Primary School, and their use was a constant reminder to road users to be mindful of the conditions.

'As is the case at the Tanjil South Primary School, the flashing lights would be a constant reminder to the public, both locals and visitors, that this is a school area and caution needs to be taken." said Mr Blackwood', said Mr Blackwood.
